What Spiritual Direction Is:
- A spiritual director is someone who listens, cares for the soul of each individual, and helps them begin or seek a closer relationship with God.
- A director assists a fellow seeker in the spiritual life by cultivating a rich and rewarding prayer life. Prayer is the foundation of the spiritual journey, as well as its summit. Without prayer we’re nothing, and have nothing: “We shall never succeed in knowing ourselves unless we seek to know God” (St. Teresa of Avila). However, many seekers are confused about prayer: what it is, what it isn’t, and “how to do it.” A spiritual director can help answer your questions.
- The foundational focus of spiritual direction is union with God. This may sound too mystical, supernatural, or unattainable to many people, yet it’s not. We are all Imago Dei—made in the image of God. And, since we’re all made in the image of God, God is eager for us to be in complete union with Him. A spiritual director is a companion who journeys with you along that path.
What Spiritual Direction is not:
- A spiritual director isn’t a psychological therapist or counselor. Instead, he or she is a companion, a listener, someone who journeys with you in order to help you discern God’s will in your life, hear the voice of the Holy Spirit speaking within your innermost depths (that “small still voice” within, 1 Kings 19:12). A spiritual director helps you connect with God in the way God longs to connect with you.
